WrestleStat Dual Comparisons for Week 5

Another short list of duals this weekend. Our head-liner is the #1 PSU vs #9 Lehigh dual on Sunday. Some very good matchups in that dual, including 133, 174, 184, and 285.

But, the question that A LOT of fans will be wondering, what lineup will the Hawkeyes send out in their dual with in-state rival Iowa State? Michael Kemerer is out of the season, but what about the other 4 starters that were absent last weekend (125, 149, 197, 285)?

New Feature in WrestleStat – Prediction Results!

I finally got some time to finish up a feature where you can see the results of the prediction.

On the Box Score page for duals, you can now see the results of the prediction engine for each of the 10 match results, right below the actual result. It will also show a result status of a green checkmark if the engine correctly predicted a win (regardless of win type), or a red “x” if it predicted a win but the result was a loss.

Couple other things to note:
1) Both wrestlers/schools must be in the same Division
2) Must be a valid win type, ie: DEC, MD, TF, FALL, SV-X, TB-X
3) The predicted result was calculated AS OF 1 DAY PRIOR TO THE ACTUAL MATCH

This will give everyone the opportunity to see, at a quick glance, how the prediction engine performs.

Linked below is the “Recent Duals” page where you can check out as many results as you want. You can also go back to prior seasons by going to a schools profile page for X season, then clicking the “Schedule” tab from there (though you have to be logged in to view other seasons’ profiles).

WrestleStat Rankings – Week 4 2018-2019

Not many changes in this weeks rankings. Iowa slid down a few spots since there are still some starters out of the lineup.

Weekend Upsets with WrestleStat – Week 4 2018-2019

This weeks edition is short and sweet because of the holidays. There were only 4 duals over the weekend, and out of those, there were only 2 “upsets”.

The first upset was on Black Friday where Mitch Bowman of Iowa was wrestling up at 197 in place of Iowa’s assumed starter Jacob Warner (he still hasn’t made his debut yet). Bowman knocked off Purdue’s #17 Christian Brunner by way of a 7 – 5 decision. You can read more about the dual here via IAWrestle.com. Both of Bowman’s matches [and victories] this season have come up at 197 filling in for Warner.

Mitch Bowman Profile

The second/last upset of the weekend came yesterday in the Cowboys vs Cowboys dual (OSU vs Wyoming) where #13 Branson Ashworth beat #5 Chandler Rogers 4 – 1. Watching the dual live on Flo I kept thinking/waiting for Rogers to hit the big move, but Branson’s defense proved to be too tough. Ashworth is off to a good start this season going 10 – 1 so far, with his only loss coming to former OSU wrestler Chance Marsteller.

Weekend Upsets with WrestleStat – Week 3 2018-2019 (and other things)

Another week in the books, and another GREAT round of upsets to highlight. Two notable upsets occurred within the same team at the Keystone Classic this weekend, where #15 Cassar of Penn State knocked off current #1 (overall) Nick Nevills. Also, #39 Berge beat fellow 149 Jarod Verkleeren. Berge had another good upset in the tournament knocking off #19 Brock Wilson of Harvard. That would seem to give these two wrestlers the nod for the starting 149, and 285 pound spots, respectively, for PSU.

Here’s the full slate of upsets over the weekend where the upset wrestler is in the top 25. In case anyone was looking for it, Gable Steveson is not on the list since he was already ranked ahead of Derek White in the [overall] 285 pound rankings, which are here: https://www.wrestlestat.com/rankings/weight/285

Other changes to WrestleStat….

I noticed/realized that I didn’t put the link for the statistical rankings page when I updated the layout of the site this offseason. Well, the page is back.

How can WrestleStat work for you?

It’s no secret that wrestling information has been hard to come by in the past. There wasn’t very much information out there, and when you did find it, it was VERY cumbersome to consolidate it together to get anything meaningful.

That’s [one of] the reasons/problems as to why I started the website. Develop an automated process to do all of these different consolidations of data to display in a meaningful, and friendly manner to the user. Any time I got an idea in my head about how to view some data, or reading through message boards about the “struggles” that fans have/had in trying to research the data to analyze it in a different way, I’d go off and automate the process to make it easy for fans.

All along, the ultimate goal has been to provide as much information as possible to fans, media, [and wrestlers and coaches] as well.

Obviously, the most popular part of the website has been the comparison feature [and common opponents]. Another feature that hasn’t been used to much is the tournament participants feature (both team and wrestler participants), until today.

Our friends over at Black Shoe Diaries put an article out today that utilizes the participants feature of the website. This is a PERFECT example of how I envision stuff/pages to be used. They provide a breakdown of the different [possible] participants, weight-by-weight, for an upcoming tournament that Penn State will be participating in this weekend.

I really appreciate everyone at BSD for publishing an article like this, pointing out the advantages to the WrestleStat website, and how the data can be used.

I want to thank JP Pearson, and BSD, for the mention and utilizing WrestleStat for all of it’s power and possibilities.

Here’s a link to the article that utilizes the participants feature: https://www.blackshoediaries.com/2018/11/16/18097542/penn-state-wrestling-keystone-classic-preview-penn-duke

NOTE: There are going to be enhancements to the wrestler participants feature in the next few weeks to more accurately project the participants in a tournament. Specifically, if the tournament is not on the school’s official schedule, then most-likely there won’t be starters participating, therefore the participants page should be showing the non-starters as [possibly] participating.
